Wanda Baker

Wanda retired as a Sign Language Interpreter from Los Angeles Unified School District about 10 years ago. She has a sensitive heart for people with special needs and disabilities. People ask her if she has deafness in her family and she tell them that she doesn’t know of any. During her last semester of high school she had contact with her first deaf high school student at the Baptist church where she was attending. Not being able to communicate with him was so hard because of two different languages. This inspired her desire to become a Sign Language Interpreter. Graduating from high school she enrolled in Pasadena City College with a major in Special Education. While taking Sign Language classes, she would go to the room where deaf students would hang out to just watch them. She learned a language that she fell in love with. From there she took an intense Sign Language training program with a lady named Virginia Hughes. She has spent 35 years of her life signing and still enjoys it!

I have followed in their footsteps as a teenager and still lead worship and play the piano in church today. My love for the Lord and worshipping Him through music is the most important thing to me.” Kerry has studied and taught under Carol Johnson, a highly qualified musician who also ran a large music studio of over 100 students. Previously belonging to the Music Teachers Association of California as a Student Member for approximately nine years, Kerry still follows a thorough music regimen. The prayer for her students is that they will play and sing their music for God’s honor and glory and, that they will develop a love of music for a lifetime. Morgan Muras

A native to Apple Valley, being of mixed ethnicity myself and being raised around many different nationalities, I took notice of the beauty of different cultures and languages at a very young age. Only every here and there did I gain mini bits of information about the many cultures I found exotic, yet not knowing where to begin immersing myself into a language or culture outside of my own.
Sign Language was introduced to me at a very young age through the song “What Color is GOD’S Skin”, by Up With People an educational organization whose mission is to inspire young people to make a difference in their world. UWP works to break down cultural barriers and create global understanding through volunteer service and a musical show.

When my first son was still too young to speak, I began to hear of the benefits of teaching kids Sign Language. I then began my journey of learning American Sign Language also known as ASL. I took my first sign language class (ASL1) at VVC in Winter 2009 with Debbie Chesser. In Spring I began (ASL2) and volunteering with a team that interprets dramas into ASL for the deaf put on by The Church For Whosoever. In 2012 I began volunteering at the Lewis Center (AAE) teaching the ASL Manual Alphabet to second, third and fourth graders to aid them in the practice and memorization of their spelling words. As well as an introduction into the language itself, I continued volunteering for three years. My oldest son Dylan was fluent as a young child and was favored among the deaf community.

Now with my four children; Dylan 15, Jessiah 9, Liyah 4 and Mahthon 1, I have my hands full. I have taught them ASL throughout different seasons of our growing family’s life, but none are currently fluent. I pray that will change with the class I am teaching for PSP Sports and More!
